After last week’s filler episode, Riverdale returned with a jaw-dropping entry. “There Will Be Blood” may have been the most Riverdale episode this year. Viewers received an equal amount of Hiram, Chic and a face from the past.
If last night’s episode had a theme, it would have been “Bodak Yellow.” Why? Everyone was making money moves. From the Blossom estate to the Cooper household. But none were more scandalous than the undertakings happening in plain sight.
Jughead sought more information on Hiram, but de didn’t have to look far. Archie let slip the Lodges’ purchased Pops’ Diner. Master Andrews fed him this information in retaliation to his dad being the Lodges’ candidate for mayor. He knew his father as the Lodges’ lackey would beget horrible consequences.
This truth places a rift between him and Veronica. When Hiram finds their inner circle has a leak, Veronica takes the blame shielding Archie. But she vows to Hermione she can no longer use Archie as a pawn.
At Thornhill, the late Blossom patriarch’s final will and testament is read at a public hearing. All Blossom-blooded Rivedalians are present; including, Hal Cooper and his two daughters. Just as Cheryl stands to make a public statement as the true heir, a familiar voice interrupts her.
The stranger has her father’s face! Luckily it’s not him but his long-lost twin brother Claudius. He left Riverdale at age 14 in fear of the Blossom twin curse. With his brother gone, he’s returned to lead the family once again. Cheryl seems relieved to have him there, but he soon sounds much like her father.
While Cheryl gains a father figure, Betty and Polly (who happens to visit) is losing theirs. Hal wants a divorce from Alice. She blames Penelope Blossom for stealing Hal, but he argues the fact his wife and daughter have chosen a stranger over him. Chic quietly smirks as he sees his plan come to fruition.
Betty continues to play and act dumb when it comes to her stepbrother. From forcing Kevin to catfish Chic for info, to sneaking around his bathroom for a hair sample. It’s too little too late for Betty hopping on the Chic is dangerous train. When Polly announces she’s leaving Riverdale for San Francisco, Betty finally sees the darkness in Chic’s eyes.
Speaking of darkness, Jughead’s investigation hits a dead end. He can’t publish the truth about Pops and is left with few options. After exhausting all resources, he utilizes one right under his nose – his father. FP takes him to visit an inmate familiar with Hiram’s career. It’s the intel Jughead needs to make his story legit.
But as he goes to publish it in The Blue & Gold, Riverdale’s principal bars the article from the press. Another Lodge lackey. The news of the expose reaches the Lodges. To get ahead of it and keep their asset in check, Hiram and Hermione reveal their massive plan to the Andrews. They want to transform the former Southside High into a private prison.
The Lodges see this as a way to boost the town’s economy and make Riverdale one of the safest small towns in America. But Fred wants no part, refusing to be a part of this plan. But Archie has fallen for Hiram’s Trumpism ideology, and remains a part of the inner circle. In a harrowing scene, Archie makes a blood oath with Hiram basically becoming a Lodge.
With Fred out as mayor, the Lodges opt for their next best thing – Hermione Lodge.
I can’t wait to see how Archie’s misguided loyalty affects his relationships with Jughead. And will Betty’s look into Chic’s past unveil her own inner darkness?
