What’s Up, Fanbros? I know you’re dipping into the whirlwind of gaming news that drops this time of year. And while reading descriptive previews may be your thing, we like to pride ourselves with bringing you the best Early Access coverage in gaming. Why should you just hear about how great a game is when you can jump right in?
And when it comes to great games, Skydance Interactive is knocking it out of the park with their VR Early Access release of Archangel: Hellfire. We’ve been waiting in anticipation since FanBros previously covered it in a preview for PaxWest 2017. Archangel fulfills your Pacific Rim fantasies by placing you inside the cockpit of a giant mech charging into a post-apocalyptic war. The single-player offered an on-rails experience with each hand controlling separate weapons, tight movement controls and the chaotic shouts and instructions that comes with many futuristic sci-fi games.
But, after our recent visit to the studio to try their latest build, it was immediately clear there was a major overhaul with this latest build. Improved graphics, gameplay and environments were a breath of fresh air. But, the most exciting addition had to be the major inclusion of mech-on-mech action with their intense new multiplayer. While I’ve yet to try the horde mode, I can testify to the 2-VS-2 Team Deathmatch to be my favorite VR multiplayer experience since Rec Room.
Thr learning curve can feel a little steep, due to improved controls to manage your mech better. This includes switches above you that give you the option to choose between your power conversions, like Energy(for stronger attacks) or Speed(which can have you flying and sprinting around your enemies). And setting your best options align with what type of mech your piloting. Such as Light(fast, stealth-cloaking, fire starter), Medium(A balanced, cyclops beam blasting class) or Heavy(a slow, heavily-armored war machine with the occasional invulnerability power-up).
Here’s the latest press release from Skydance, celebrating this exciting new mode:
“Skydance Interactive has launched Archangel: Hellfire for Early Access on Steam and Oculus today. Archangel: Hellfire combines new, visceral multiplayer content and the award-winning singleplayer game into one full VR package, complete with six-story-high war machines and explosive VR combat.
Archangel: Hellfire features three action-packed game modes for players to unleash massive mech-on-mech mayhem, including the highly-requested Team Deathmatch, featuring intense off-rails 2v2 multiplayer combat. Players can also face off against hordes of enemies in Cooperative Mode or play through the story-driven singleplayer campaign.
Set at the end of the 21st century, the world is in ruins and under the control of HUMNX, a corporation turned into an autocratic regime out of a desire to “heal the world,” no matter the human cost. Leading the resistance are the United States Free Forces, armed with a one-of a kind weapon: the Archangel. The resistance will do everything they can to try to stop HUMNX and take back their freedom, but HUMNX resources are plentiful, and they have been working on weapons of their own to face off against Archangel-class mechs.
Players who own the original Archangel can jump into Early Access Battle Training and hone their skills in Team Deathmatch beginning today on the Genesis Facility and Collins Base maps. For those new to the series, they can join in on the Early Access Battle Training and enlist as mech pilots by acquiring the base game, which is available on Steam and Oculus.”
