Not wanting to miss out on the deluge of comic trailers released, Sony Pictures gives us the first look at Venom, directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad), and starring Tom Hardy. Despite rumors of a Tom Holland appearance, early shots of the Golden Gate Bridge suggest that Eddie Brock and Peter Parker are separated by a lot more than an age gap this time around. Designed as a stand-alone film featuring Hardy’s take on the down on his luck former Journalist, Venom looks to be a tale of redemption despite our darker natures.
Tom Hardy sure likes to run. The trailer appears to borrow heavily from the Ultimate Universe’s Venom origin. Instead of the symbiote being from outer space, it was developed by human scientists as a cancer cure. Riz Ahmed’s character is later seen revealing the familiar black goo to a group of colleagues, adding credence to the theory. Given how much Eddie references loss throughout the trailer, it would be a fair assumption that he encounters the symbiote via voluntary experimentation. The scientific fugitive element is very reminiscent of the Prototype video game series. The goal here isn’t to portray the Venom character as an outright villain this time around, but more a sympathetic anti-hero.
With a scheduled Fall release, Sony Pictures’ Venom stars Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road, The Dark Knight) Michelle Williams, (The Greatest Showman, Manchester By the Sea) Riz Ahmed, (The Night Of, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) Jenny Slate (Big Mouth, Zootopia), Woody Harrelson (Zombieland, The People vs Larry Flynt) Michelle Lee (Altered Carbon, Pacific Rim), Sailor Larocque, (Penance Lane, Good Girls) and Reid Scott (My Boys, Veep)
