I Know What You Did In Riverdale: S2 Ep7 “Riverdale” (RECAP)

S2 EP7 Riverdale – Recap

After a holiday hiatus, Riverdale returned. We were promised a riveting development in the Black Hood saga. Instead “Tales from the Darkside” followed our teen gumshoes in three misguided chapters.

Chapter one pitted Jughead and Archie against Serpent loan shark Penny. After lying about FP being attacked in prison, Penny binds Jughead as her new errand boy. A crate of  Jingle-Jangle needs shipped to Greendale. He enlists Archie to help.

The two experience car trouble. Luckily a mysterious drifter gives them a lift (Tony Todd). He tells Jughead the Black Hood is reminiscent of the Riverdale Reaper, a serial killer from the city’s past. He believes it could be the same man enforcing a similar moral cleansing.

The second chapter centers Josie in an odd narrative involving Single White Female Cheryl Blossom; and, reformed jock Chuck. In the midst of this, writers allude to Trump supporters sending death threats to Josie’s mother, Mayor McCoy.

If Josie and Chuck – two of five black characters – were featured more prominently throughout the series, this wouldn’t have felt like a separate show within a show. Ultimately her arc added nothing to the story, only highlighting Cheryl Blossom as psychotic.

The tribal chapter finds Veronica assisting Betty. Betty believes Sheriff Keller is the Black Hood. Veronica assumes his night roaming is the labor of an affair. We learn Keller’s wife is stationed with the military. We also learn Zaddy Keller could double as a Marvel hero when Veronica stumbles upon him working out. Shirtless. But I digress.

After Betty is caught snooping through his house, Sheriff Keller finally silences her suspicions. He has an alibi for each murder. But Alice Cooper’s daughter, determined for the truth, persists. Keller is having an affair – with Mayor McCoy. Honestly the only moment I gasped through the hour telecast.

The lackluster episode closed with our six Riverdaleans at Pop’s when a phone call leaves them all visibly shook. The Black Hood relays they all have failed his test, and reckoning is coming.

This chapter felt extremely unhinged, distracted even. While I saw what it was trying to do – This Is Us and How to Get Away with Murder do it better – and it ultimately failed. It was probably the weakest episode this season. That said, what did you think about this episode? Tell us in the comments. Is Riverdale living up to your expectations?
