Why I’m Giving Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D a Chance…

This is not one of the reasons. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Despite the fact that many people think Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is is shoe-in as a series that will be picked up beyond the initial Fall season; there has been a rumbling that not all is right in this project. Particularly because it’s on ABC and will presumably be bastardized by Disney is some way, shape, or form.

For anyone that has their doubts, click the link for a few reasons why you should be excited to check out the show:

1.) Agent Coulson

I wish I had a forty to pour out for this dude when he was killed in the first Avengers movie (and yes, inside the theater..). Did Loki really have to do him that dirty? Seriously?

Nevertheless Coulson is the feel good hero and clearly provides the pull for the series. When I attended New York ComicCon last October I was in the panel where Clark Gregg first announced that Coulson would return for the Avengers series. His announcement was met with deafening cheers and applause. Glad to see the badass back.

2.) The special effects

Ok sooooo I know–this can really either be generally good, or generally bad. However, based upon the trailer (and I know, even THAT can be misleading..), it looks like they will keep the CGI decency levels up. As long as it doesnt get as bad as SyFy level graphics or even that god-awful X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie then we’ll be fine. I mean seriously, they couldn’t get the CG for a movie level project right?

3.) This is the chance for Marvel/ABC/Disney (Avelney?) to introduce lesser known characters.

How cool would it be to see story arcs built up around folks like Spider Woman, Luke Cage, or even She-Hulk? (maybe especially She-Hulk…). While the most l33t comic book readers will tell you these heroes are fairly common place, the average person would not have a clue these characters even exist. Besides simply making money, I personally believe the point of the mainstreaming of comics (Marvel in particular) is to build that bridge between the layman and the comic book geek. And, of course, to find more avenues where they can make money. I’m more so relying upon trustworthy folks like Whedon to make this happen. I know corporations really don’t care that deeply–so long as the bottom line is met.

4.) Its written and directed by Joss Whedon for goodness sake!

I really, REALLY do not recall an occasion where Joss has ever let me down creatively (with my personal exception of Cabin in the Woods since I’m not really down with horror-based films). Joss is a damn fine wordsmith and can MacGuyver his way around a script with ease. His intentional/unintentional style of humor is so damn smart and he knows how to best plot action points, while balancing them out with scenes of serenity (see what I did there??). At the most base level he knows how to write and tell a story. I guess I just love the guy.

5.) Pure faith in the product and mission

Call me naive or really trusting, but I don’t think–hell, I know Joss wouldn’t put his name on anything that was complete trash. When your name and/or legacy is on the line you tend to be a lot more careful and strategic about what you do. Based purely on the trailer is seems like they won’t go the easy route and introduce mere sex kittens or one dimensional agents. While I am nervous about the acting caliber of a few people highlighted in the preview I have nothing else but to leave faith in the hands of the comic book gods that all will go well.

Let’s just get this party started.
