One of the hardest things about growing up for both parents and budding teenagers is that inevitable schism that tends to form as children become young adults. As the generation gap widens and the adolescent begins to formulate their own view of the world, from peer groups and other outside influences, oftentimes it causes them to view their parents in a negative, almost antagonistic role. Now take that same scenario with one exception… “What if your parents really are evil supervillains?”
Hulu released the teaser trailer for the upcoming series, Marvel’s Runaways prior to a panel dedicated to the show on Friday night at New York Comic Con. The show debuts November 21st, and the footage appears to detail scenes depicted in the early issues of the 2003 Marvel Comics series of the same name, with the first 12 issues written by fan-favorite scribe Brian K. Vaughan (Saga, Papergirls, Y: The Last Man). Once teens Alex, Molly, Gert, Chase, Carolina and Nico witness their parents murder a house guest during a ritual sacrifice, the characters do as the title suggests and skip town. Attempting to carve their own paths in a world unlike anything they could have conceived of previously, their paths intertwine with other notable Marvel characters who just see the children as troubled teens on the run, or seek to exploit them in some way. Characters like Cloak and Dagger, Captain America, even Ultron, though I don’t suspect there will be any official connection with the MCU.
Starring a talented young cast including, Rhenzy Feliz (Teen Wolf, Casual) Ariela Barer (The Thundermans, Modern Family) and veterans like James Marsters (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Smallville), and Angel Parker (American Crime Story, Lab Rats), if this adaptation takes after the source material, Marvel may have another small-screen success in their midst.
