Andrea Lewis. She’s an actress, writer, singer, producer, director, and a part of the wave of women of color making the change they want to see in the world. (Not to mention that big beautiful hair!) Lewis got her start as an actress appearing in the films Down In The Delta, and Livin’ for Love: The Natalie Cole Story. Her presence grew on television as she appeared on Soul Food, and earning a regular spot on the hit Canadian television series, Degrassi: The Next Generation. Yes, the same Degrassi that Drake appeared on. Lewis left Degrassi in 2006 and continues to act today.
Lewis found a new avenue of success on Youtube, through the ‘Those Girls Are Wild‘ channel she shared with TV personality Shannon T. Boodram, and through her own personal channel as well. She created the web series ‘Black Actress,’ partnering with Issa Rae to produce and distribute the 1st season through Issa’s youtube channel. The series explore the life of young actress Cory as she maneuvers her way through the entertainment industry as a black woman. Cory experiences professional, as well as personal, highs and lows on her journey. But, her support system of good friends and family keeps her going when she gets discouraged. The web series also features interviews with prominent black actresses such as Tatiana Ali, Reagan Gomez, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Jennifer Lewis, Amber Riley, Garcelle Beauvais and many more.
After a succesful first season run, Lewis set out to plan for season two. Premiering four episodes on her personal youtube channel, Lewis put the series on hiatus to begin crowdfunding her production company, Jungle Wild Productions. The company reached their $30,000 goal on Kickstarter last month with almost 300 backers crowdfunding Lewis’ company. We applaud Andrea Lewis for working to tell the stories that women of color are fighting for. She has two more web series in production currently, as well an independent film.
