If you’re like us, you’ve been waiting each Sunday with bated breath for each new American Gods to drop. Every episode is a treasure and provides both shocking and satisfying revelations, character arcs, and color commentary on the melting pot of American culture.
This week we get a glimpse of Emily Browning, typically portraying the character Laura Moon, as the character Essie Macgowan. If you’ve caught up with the series you will notice how Laura Moon’s and Mad Sweeney’s paths have collided–and apparently there’s history there. In speaking with Variety back in March, show writer Bryan Fuller noted:
“Essie was one of Michael and I’s favorite stories in the book. It’s essentially the tale of how Mad Sweeney made it to America. And we were talking about casting that role, and as we were in that conversation, Michael said, ‘Oh, we should just cast Emily in this role.’ And then we went to talk to Emily, and it was like, ‘So, the Essie episode’ — she was like, ‘Have you cast that actor yet? Because I think I should play her.’ And we were like, ‘Well, that just worked out well.’”
This reveal comes on the heels of great news for American Gods as it was recently announced that the series has been greenlit for Season 2 on Starz. We also have a quick clip of Essie’s introduction ahead of this Sunday’s show. Check it out below!
